Ecuadorian LGBTQ Context

Currently Ecuador is experiencing violent waves of LGBTQ-phobia resulting from the Same-Sex Marriage Act passed on June 12, 2019. Religious beliefs and a general lack of awareness of prior legal advances, such as the decriminalization of homosexuality (1997) and the Gender Identity Law (2016), drive this violence. These monumental achievements for the LGBTQ community cannot be forgotten within public memory and could be jeopardized if conservative groups continue with their discriminatory agenda. Our project aims to celebrate these achievements through consciousness-raising about existing rights, as well as strategize on how to break down social barriers still faced by the LGBTQ community in Ecuador.
