What books blew your mind, Valerie?

Text

Asked what STS books blew her mind, Valerie Olson had this to say:

  • Annemarie Mol, The Body Multiple - “a genius work”

  • Hannah Landecker, Culturing Life - “one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read”

  • Stefan Helmreich, Alien Ocean - “obviously influenced my work quite a bit, he was writing it while I was a student”

  • Bruno Latour, Science in Action - “I’m not afraid to say that Bruno Latour’s Science In Action blew my mind, because I had come out of a career in medicine”

Olson, Valerie. Interview by Maggie Woodruff. Personal interview. Irvine, CA, June 12, 2018.

Critical Commentary

This artifact is part of a PECE essay on what books have inspired UCI Anthro Faculty throughout the years.

This PECE essay helps to answer the STS Across Borders analytic question: “What people, projects, and products exemplify how this STS formation has developed over time?”

This essay is part of a broader exhibit on UCI Anthro STS.
